A Gold & Silver Art Nouveau Jewell Cane, France ca. 1900

A Gold & Silver Art Nouveau Jewell Cane, France ca. 1900

The designer of this Art Nouveau Jewell communicates the joy that plants feel when being caressed by the sun and being moved by the wind, conceived by three plants all along, where the curved lines of its stems and long leaves intertwine harmoniously. Goldsmith technique suggests high skills, combining yellow-gold and rose-gold applied on a silver surface decorated with dotted incisions. A beautiful cultured grey pearl on the terrace is the cherry on the top of this marvellous composition.

The tested Silver knob, modelled in heavy cast and finely hand chased, is 5,5 cm high x 4 cm diameter. There is an unreadable silversmith mark, it is on top of a sound malacca shaft and is finishing with a 3 cm. horn tip, the O.L. is 90 cm. Without any chips or cracks or crashes, the condition is excellent!

The Art Nouveau ornament is composed of motifs that usually comes from asymmetrical compositions, as seen on furniture, jewellery, lamps, printed fabrics, etc. Nature is the source of inspiration for this art movement. The motifs are often long-stemmed, gracefully stylized plants and flowers as lilies, chalices, irises, poppies etc.

tournament, or tourney (from Old French) torneiementtornei), was a chivalrous competition or mock fight in the Middle Ages and Renaissance (12th to 16th centuries), Tournaments included hand-to-hand combat, contests of strength and accuracy. Some thought that the tournaments were a threat to public order. The shows were often held to celebrate coronations, marriages of notable figures, births, recent conquests, peace treatises, etc. Some tournaments were held simply for pure entertainment.

This Milord handle Cane is an extraordinary hand-chased silversmith-work and is conceived to represent a tournament scene, we see, four knights intertwined in fierce combat, they are all covered by harnesses and armed with the weapons of those times. The scene is finished with an acanthus wreath until reaching the terrace, it is wearing minor dents around doe the use, there are no blows in the chivalrous scene.

The handle is 7,5 cm high x 4 cm in diameter, it is very well modeled. We see a silver maker mark and a French trademark on the collar. The shaft is a beautiful malaca, and it displays the brand ANTOINE PALAIS ROYALE close to the ring (see picture). It finishes with a bimetal ferrule. The O.L. is 90 cm and the condition is excellent.

A Russian Champleve enamel Cane, Moscow ca. 1890

A Russian Champleve enamel Cane, Moscow ca. 1890

Champlevé enamelling is conceived to add colour and glitter to metalwork by creating small “compartments” below the surface, which are then filled with powdered glass and other materials and heated to a fusion point in a kiln. Once the enamel has cooled, must be smoothed with pumice stone and polished. The metal lines left untouched between the troughs serve as partitions.

Used in jewellery art made during Classical Antiquity, it was only during the era of Celtic art (from about 400 BCE onwards) that the technique became consistent and widespread.

This cane is fashioned as a Montgolfier balloon and modelled in the raised enamel champleve technique with Russian patterns and coloured with turquoise blue, red, white, purple, and ultramarine-blue shadows. The elaboration detail and fineness suggest high skills. There are traces it has been gilded once. It is 7 cm high x 4 cm diameter, it bears Russian trademarks, one is the traditional Kokoshnik 48 the other is AA (assayer) Anatoly Apollonovich Artsybashev, active in Moscow from 1888 - 1898, according to the well-known silver-marks catalogue online

https://www.925-1000.com/Frussia_assay_01.html It is on top of a sound black snakewood shaft and finishing with an ivory tip, the O.L. is 91 cm, there are minimal signs of use, the condition is perfect.

Countryside Wolf, lovely mascot Cane, England ca 1900

The whole cane is made of a single piece of a branch. The figure depicts a masterly carved wolf with glass eyes and coloured face 10 cm to the side x 4 cm wide. It is brand marked: MADE IN ENGLAND close to the horn tip, also marked CAMPION PARIS above close to the figure which indicates it had been retailed to this fancy shop in the French capital. Possible no other creature has stirred us to a more mystical communion with nature or a more abject fear of her dark realities than the wolf. Wolves are hair-raisers. Musical interest Walking stick ca. 1900

Musical interest Walking stick ca. 1900

Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune, known in English as Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun, is a symphonic poem for orchestra by Claude Debussy, composed and performed in Paris in 1894.

This musical masterpiece was a big turning point at that time, it opens, famously, with a sinuous solo flute melody that conjures up all the languorous heat of a summer afternoon in the forest evoked through smooth melodies and almost improvisatory passages, it tells the tale of a mythical faun, playing his pipes alone in the woods. He is enchanted by nymphs and naiads and drifts off to sleep filled with colourful dreams.

Debussy stretched the traditional system of keys and tonalities to their limits. Most of the great musicians have been inspired by this amazing musical composition which later was adapted into a ballet when Vaslav Nijinsky danced to it in Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes in Paris.

This cane is modeled in a L shape handle and exhibits Debussy's faun, lying naked along the design of the handle shape and recreating in a corner of the forest, reaching out his arm to play with a waterfall. This scene perfectly recreates the musical message that the composer wanted to convey to us. It is signed by F. LASSERRE a well-known artist who specialized in rending work for famous silversmiths. On the other side, we see the goat, the inseparable companion of the fauns eating a flowering plant.

It is 9 cm high x 10 cm to the side, it bears French silver trademarks, it is on top of a sound laurel wood shaft and finishing with a bimetal ferrule. The O.L. is 92 cm, there are minimal signs of use, and the condition is perfect.

Napoleon III Flowers-composition Walking stick. France, ca 1880

Napoleon III Flowers-composition Walking stick. France, ca 1880

This exquisite Napoleon III hook handle is finished with high skills in a beautiful and practical design representing branches of flowers and stylized acanthus leaves on a Neoclassical composition. It measures 10 cm to the side x 9 cm high. It is marked TALLOIS PARIS by its silversmith makers-marks and exhibits the initials A. R. from the previous owner, it is on top of a beautiful sound snakewood shaft and finished with a bimetal ferrule. The O.L. is 89 cm and without chips or cracks on the metal, only a few signs of use, the condition is excellent. It is still a very wearable cane.

In terms of design, the handlebar hook is considered optimal, easy to carry in the hands, it can always be hooked on the fingers and not let it fall, and above all, it can be easily hung from the other arm while keeping your hands busy.
