An early seventeenth century Delft blue tile with a Dutch proverb.


A Delft blue tile. Size 13 x 13 cm. Thickness 10 mm. The tile shows a man with in his right hand his hat. This refers to a Dutch proverb : " with your hat in your hand you can travel the entire land ". In other words: politeness always brings you far. This rare tile is in perfect condition and has unusual "oxen-head"-corner decorations. It was made in Holland around 1650.

A painted corner cupboard. High 83 cm. Wide 50 cm. Deep 20 cm. The flat door with a very well painted scene of a story told by the Greek historian Herodotus. Tomyris, queen of the Massagetes, a nomad society living on the eastern border of Persia, defeated the famous emperor Cyrus in 530 B.C. in a battle and killed him. Cyrus was known as a very successfull, but also very cruel man. After the battle she had his head severed and immersed in a bowl with blood. The cupboard is in mint condition and was painted on the island of Ameland around 1750.

A seventeenth century stillife by Maerten Boelema "de Stomme".


A painting on two oak panels connected with dovetails. Size of the painting 70 x 57 cm. Size of frame 100 x 90 cm. The painting shows a stillife with a pewter can, glasses, a blackberry cake and a nautilus cup. On the left the painting is signed on both panels with "MB de Stomme". Maerten Boelema was the deaf-mute son of a rich notary public in Leeuwarden. He became a pupil, the only, of the famous Willem Claeszn Heda of Haarlem in 1642. Born in Leeuwarden in 1611, he died in Haarlem in 1644. In his short life he produced several excellent paintings, all still lifes. This painting is one of them.

A knife with a brass handle. Overall length 20,5 cm. Length of handle 7 cm. The handle shows a man playing a bag-pipe. The knife is in mint and original condition. The blade has a clear blacksmiths stamp in the form of a "fleur de lys". The knife is rare, of Dutch origin and made around 1600.

A small Bohemian bottle. Diameter 11 cm. Thickness 2,5 cm. Sodaglass with typical cold enamel paint. On one side a charming girl with a couple of milk buckets. And on the other side the text: "Wahres Vergnügen und Zufriedenheit" (real Joy and Satisfaction). With a clear pontil on the underside. In mint condition. Bohemia, mid- 19th C.

A miniature candlestick. Height 6,5 cm. Diameter 5 cm. Brass with wonderful patina. Found in an early excavation site in a village in Zeeland. Possibly meant as a toy. Mid-sixteenth century.

An oak bedstool. Wide 81 cm. High 40 cm. Deep 33 cm. On one side : "ANNO 1743" and the initials of bride and groom: "MS" and "AKD". Along with birds and flowers. On the other side surprisingly exactly the same initials, birds and flowers, but now with "ANNO 1876". Apparently this stool was given twice as a wedding present, first in 1743 and then again 124 years later. The stool still remains in mint condition.

A framed sand-hour. Height 18,5 cm. Octagonal base with a 10 cm diameter. Original glass in its original blackened pear wood housing. The sand hour is in mint condition and well functioning. Running time around 45 minutes. Holland around 1650. Seventeenth century hour glasses are rare.

A bedstool. Long 84 cm. Wide 26 cm. High 40 cm. Painted red, green and gold. Elegant open front. This type of stool was used to climb into bed. It is in mint condition and was made in Friesland around 1750.

An early 19th C "babbekistje" from the island of Marken.


A "babbekistje ". Long 29 cm. Wide 21 cm. High 18 cm. Painted on all sides with typical landscapes with houses and turrets. These pinewood boxes were originally made in Southern Germany and transported to the island of Marken, the only place in Holland where they can be found. In Marken they were used to store childrens clothing of the traditional Marker wear. The box is in good condition with a smaal repair to the lid.

A tobacco box. Long 17,5 cm. Wide 11,5 cm. High 3 cm. The toolware box is painted on both sides with scenes of a fox hunt. The box is in mint condition. The paintings are very delicately performed and different on both sides. The clothes of the hunting party suggest a mid-nineteenth century origin. Probably Duth or English.
